Since S.H.I.E.L.D. was announced in August last year, most of the focus has been on just one of the great minds behind the show, Joss Whedon. It’s probably a fair bet that most people visiting this site will have at least an inkling of who Joss Whedon is but we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the other creative minds behind S.H.I.E.L.D. (or at least the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot.)
Writers
Joss Whedon really doesn’t need any introduction but he is best known for the long-lived Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, the not so long lived but cult hit Firefly and of course the box office smash The Avengers without which this series (pilot) would never exist. Whedon has an extremely loyal fan following and while there are some misguided myths about certain aspects of his career he has proven to be a hugely successful writer, producer, and director.
Maurissa Tancharoen is best known for her part in the hit internet musical Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog which she co-wrote and starred in but she has also worked as a story editor on series like Drop Dead Diva and Dollhouse. Tancharoen co-produced Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and Spartacus: War of the Damned
Jed Whedon also wrote and appeared in Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, worked as a story editor on Drop Dead Diva and Dollhouse and co-produced Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and Spartacus: War of the Damned.
Of note: Jed Whedon is Joss Whedon’s brother and is married to Maurissa Tancharoen.
Both Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are credited as “comic book” writers for S.H.I.E.L.D.
Producers
In Addition to Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, producers of S.H.I.E.L.D. are:
Jeph Loeb (executive producer) is Marvel Entertainment’s “head of television” and also an Eisner Award winning comic writer having worked with DC and now exclusively for Marvel. Loeb is also a television writer and producer with credits on popular shows like Smallville and Lost in addition to Iron Man, The Avengers and Spiderman Animated TV Series.
Jeffrey Bell (executive producer) is best known among Whedon fans for his work as showrunner on Angel but has also worked on series including The X-Files and Alias
Garry A. Brown (producer) began his career in the 80s working as 2nd Assistant Director on shows like The A-Team and Miami Vice and is known more recently for producing shows like Prison Break.
