Born in 1984 as Natalia Alianova Romanov, she is better known after her defection from K.G.B. to S.H.I.E.L.D. as Natasha Romanov, though she retained her K.G.B. codename of Black Widow, and forms S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Strike Team Delta alongside her long-time partner Agent Clint Barton, which was inducted into The Avengers’ Initiative during the Battle of New York in 2012.

When Agents Phil Coulson and Maria Hill discussed Grant Ward’s suitability for Coulson’s new team, Coulson remarked that Ward had the highest marks for espionage since Agent Romanoff.^[1]

When a angry Coulson confronted Agent Victoria Hand over the lack of extraction for Agents Ward and Fitz on the Overkill Mission, Hand pointed to the fact Coulson himself designed dozens of similar missions and that Agents Barton and Romanov didn’t need extraction plans. Coulson countered that the difference was Barton and Romanov knew before hand there wouldn’t be an extraction team waiting.^[2]
