See more details on The Index page

Superpowered beings, or Gifteds, generally includes people with extraordinary strength or unexplainable gifts, either born with, caused by accidents, or deliberately created. These can include but are not limited to pyrokinesis, telekinesis, super healing, super strength. When potential Unregistered Gifteds are brought to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s attention, a S.H.I.E.L.D. team is usually dispatched to evaluate the Gifted to be registered on the Index. However, not all intakes are successful. On one specific occasion, a Bahrain intake process went seriously south when the Gifted and his/her followers took a civilian and a few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents hostage, and the Gifted was killed when Agent Melinda May was forced to eliminate the threat.

edit] Assets

S.H.I.E.L.D. classifies a select group of top-tier, non-superpowered, non-agent scientists as "Assets". These Assets are given round-the-clock S.H.I.E.L.D. protection while researching for them. The Assets are also moved every few months around the United States clandestinely to prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. enemies from recruiting them. Their priority levels are color-coded, with priority red Assets given the heaviest protection.
