Centipede is the codename Rising Tide member Skye, and later S.H.I.E.L.D., coined for the Project that is attempting to replicate and create Super-Soldiers with the use of "every known source of super power thrown in a blender". It is funded by an unnamed organization, now suspected to be Quinn Worldwide and its owner, international billionaire Ian Quinn, who works for the mastermind of the Project, thought to be The Clairvoyant

edit] Centipede Serum

The Centipede Serum Filter is created with Chitauri metal, and the Serum itself is said to include:

  • a serum similar to Erskine’s Super Soldier Serum from 1940s (of which Steve Rogers was the sole test subject);
  • gamma radiation (similar to the experimentation of Bruce Banner);
  • Extremis virus (developed by A.I.M. in Iron Man 3

During Stage 2, the Serum was added with the fire-resistant platelets of Chan Ho Yin to stabilize the combustive nature of the Extremis virus within the Serum.

edit] Stage 1

Project Centipede was first discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. when their investigation into a potential Unregistered Gifted Individual, Mike Peterson, led them to the kidnap and interrogation of Skye, a member of The Rising Tide, who had heard about the Project over the internet before all traces of it was erased. By this point, there had only been two test subjects with the Centipede Serum, and the explosion of their first lab in Los Angeles caused by their first subject, causing multiple deaths and leaving only the doctor (Dr Debbie) and her second subject Mike Peterson alive, necessitates them to "scorch Earth" on their Los Angeles operations; unfortunately, Mike Peterson escaped their assassination attempts and went dark when he was brought into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.

Undeterred, the Project migrated and set up a new base in Hong Kong in order to tackle the combustion problem prevalent due to the Extremis virus in the Serum. To this end, Raina tracked down and found a member of The Rising Tide, Miles Lydon, and paid him US$1,000,000 to crack the Chinese S.H.I.E.L.D. datastreams and leak out the list of Gifted Individuals, one of whom was pyrokinetic Chan Ho Yin in Hong Kong. Raina arranged to meet Chan to confirm his fire powers and the fact that fire doesn’t burn Chan up, before kidnapping him and persuading him to join the Project under false pretenses. Debbie managed to figure out that it was Chan’s platelets that kept him from burning up, and drained them in order to stabilize the Extremis virus in the Serum.

Unfortunately, Chan’s kidnap also triggered a S.H.I.E.L.D. investigation into his disappearance, and Agent Coulson led a team together with Hong Kong division Agent Kwan Chen to rescue Chan. While Project Centipede again lost control of the Hong Kong lab as well as both Chan and Debbie, Raina managed to escape with a tray full of Chan’s fire-resistant platelets.

edit] Stage 2

Subsequently, Raina moved Centipede’s operations back to the United States in order to better communicate with her contact, Edison Po, an inmate of the Havenworth Federal Penitentiary, former expert on military tactical strategy, and the only contact with the mysterious Clairvoyant, who is likely the ultimate authority on the Project. However, having learned the lessons of the previous two labs, Raina now moves operations every few days so that S.H.I.E.L.D. cannot track them successfully.

She then found three new subjects and injected them with the stabilized Centipede serum in even greater doses than the first two subjects, as Brian Hayward, one of the test subjects, was seen with Centipede filters on both forearms, shoulders, and back. She was also given the Eye Implant technology by her mysterious employer, perfected through another project, to use on her three subjects in order to better control them. A month after the collapse of the Hong Kong facility, she engineered the jailbreak of Edison Po with her three new subjects, in order for him to be able to better coordinate the Centipede soldiers on the ground in their fight against S.H.I.E.L.D.. The jailbreak attracted S.H.I.E.L.D.’s attention once again, and the mission to retrieve Edison as well as expose the Project, was assigned to Agent Coulson’s team.

This led to a showdown at an Oakland factory just as Project Centipede was ready to move out, and while the tide seem to initially be in the favor of Project Centipede, Mike Peterson, their second test subject who was now in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s employ, managed to disable one soldier, Brian Hayward. Seeing this, Raina ordered the other two subjects to leave the premises and killed Brian through his eye implant so that he cannot be interrogated about the Project, exposing their connection to the organization which controlled former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Akela Amador with the same eye implant technology. However, as surprised as Raina was that Peterson, who hasn’t been injected with the Centipede serum since he went dark three months ago, still has the increased strength from the Serum, it was even more surprising when Edison declared that "what he has is your key to Stage 3", referring to Peterson’s companion, Phil Coulson

edit] Stage 3

Stage 3 of the Project requires the ability for the Centipede soldiers to be resurrected at will, and it apparently hinges on information only Phil Coulson can provide. To this end, Raina kidnapped Mike Peterson’s young son Ace and forced a hostage exchange to get Coulson, then she escaped with him on a helicopter while destroying all evidences on Centipede’s side at the meeting place, including the car in which they arrived, as a means of staging Peterson’s death in order to camouflage his kidnapping.

However, Coulson managed to hold out on his interrogators for more than 36 hours for his team to successfully locate and rescue him, though not before the partial truth of his revival was revealed to him in the process. With Raina apprehended by S.H.I.E.L.D., the Project ground to a temporary halt, with the only test subject left of the Project, Mike Peterson – now also with an Eye Implant – handed over personally to project financier Ian Quinn under orders from the Clairvoyant. Quinn funded Peterson’s new robotic limb replacement via a purchase from Cybertek’s Project Deathlok, claiming that "every piece of technology in you is the best money can buy", turning Peterson into Project Centipede’s cyborg soldier, Deathlok.
