For the past couple of months the catch phrase being used to promote Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been “It’s all connected” and while this has applied within the series itself, as the premiere for Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier drew near it became apparent that all things were connected in the wider Marvel Universe as well as within the show itself.
As we discussed in our “review” (posted in our forums last week in order to spoiler-protect unwitting observers), we picked up on some key elements in the movie that have a huge connections to the series. For whatever reason, some of these things seem to have completely passed some viewers by and while there are still numerous people online who claim there’s almost no connection between the series and the big screen Captain America epic, the truth can no longer be denied.
USA Today reports that the events of the movie including the reveal of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s “civil war” with the rise of Hydra from within the deepest foundations of the organization leaves Coulson’s team not knowing who to trust and the events will essentially form as a “retooling” of the show in the remaining six episodes of the season.
Executive Producer and head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb says “It’s an extremely unique experience that doesn’t exist anywhere else out there in the entertainment business.” Showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen says , “Hopefully people who’ve had mixed feelings about the show will now understand it was all part of a big plan.”
USA Today also reports that at least “One major betrayal” will arise in the series and “What’s left of Coulson’s team is forced to deal on their own with the dismantling of their whole world as well as the new Hydra threat.” They go on to reveal that Coulson and his team are forced to deal with more secrets coming to the fore plus some new characters: Patton Oswalt guest-stars as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Eric Koenig, Adrian Pasdar is Col. Glenn Talbot and Amy Acker plays a cello-playing love interest for Coulson mentioned in passing in The Avengers.
