SPOILER WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the one-shot for Agent Peggy Carter which will be released on the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray on Sept 24th 2013).
Agent Peggy Carter was one of my favorite parts of Captain America. She was unique in a wash of male characters. She was snarky, had heart, and was beautifully loyal. So I was excited to hear that she’d be getting her own spin-off (which comes out with the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray on Sept 24th).
The Marvel films do get dinged up a bit for their lack of strong female characters (I mean, come on, Black Widow is the only Avenger to not get her own film? RIDICULOUS [Editor note: Hawkeye didn't get a movie either but the point is made] ). So I expected this one shot to be a nice chance for Marvel to prove their strong-female cred and, for the most part they delivered.
For those who haven’t seen it yet (which is probably a majority of folks), the one shot takes place a year after the events of Captain America. In a kind of Mad Men set up, Peggy Carter is dealing with misogynistic views that won’t let her out on the field. After being tasked into being the secretary while “the boys” go off for a drink. She intercepts a call for agents and completes a kick-ass mission all on her own.
Score for strong female characters, correct? Yes. Kind of. At least it’s a step in the right direction for Marvel who can forget that females are super heroes too.
My main problem is that, in the end, it’s a man who has to save her from her awful boss (an awesome cameo though in the form of Howard Stark). It kind of undercuts the message of the one shot. While I get that it’s a period piece, and (in a sense) it was beautiful revenge on her boss, I was hoping for her efforts to be rewarded without intervention. Of course, equality isn’t easy and I do commend Stark for making the boss eat crow. I just want more. I want strong female characters who are equal to the men they are in a movie with and have important roles to play of their own merit. Lets get a few more Black Widows Marvel, please. I am very optimistic that we will.
All in all though, it’s an awesome one shot, especially for S.H.I.E.L.D. fans because there is a tie in the show. It’ll be interesting to see how that piece of tie-in works.
I, for one, am still a massive Peggy Carter fan and I hope we see a lot more of her in the future.
