Avengers: Age of Ultron Review (Minor spoilers only) Wed, 22 Apr 2015 17:38:45 +0000 Avengers Age of Ultron

Note: This review contains minor spoilers only.

I plan to write a more detailed review once I've had a chance to sit down and think it over properly (and perhaps catch a second viewing) but for now here are some of my thoughts on Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I went into this movie mostly spoiler-free. I had seen the first promo, the hammer clip and accidentally heard some basic character information and I'm glad I went to the effort of avoiding anything else, it certainly wasn't easy!

I have been known to point out that Marvel movies frequently start out slow and then after about 20 minutes the pace really starts to pick up, not so with Age of Ultron, the action starts right out of the gate with this one.

When we begin, it is clear the Avengers have been working together for some time, they are working well as a team and playing to each other's strengths but, of course, when things like that go well you know it's not going to last and it's not long before trouble begins to surface both within the team and outside of it.

Like it's predecessor, this movie packs in a lot of Marvel-Whedon humor which for me is always something that kicks up the enjoyment level. There are quite a few laugh out loud moments and I appreciate that even in the midst of the world going to hell there's time to pause for a quick laugh... or 10.

There are a LOT of characters to deal with in Age of Ultron and I think Whedon has done a good job of giving each of them some significance, it can't have been an easy task. The cast from the previous movies all return in fine form and while it's hard to forget about the actor behind Ultron (James Spader's voice is very distinct) the complexity he brings to the character makes him an obvious choice for the role. The Twins (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen) have a tough job up against the veteran Marvel actors but they prove themselves worthy and I found I liked their characters more than I expected to.

Rather than being a simple action packed tale of good vs evil, Age of Ultron establishes an interesting level of ambiguity between good and evil in more ways than one. It is also a story of relationships on various, sometimes unexpected, levels.

It was clear to me throughout the movie that this is just one part of the bigger picture and I actually found it a little distracting to be thinking about how several key points were going to lead to in future movies.

For the most part I would put Age of Ultron on equal par with the The Avengers, which is still my favorite, with a couple of small exceptions.

A side plot line relating to one of the characters seemed a little out of place and more importantly I felt it didn't really add a lot to the overall story. I know why it was there but I'm not sure it was really necessary. I suspect it's something that may bother some fans for other reasons so I question if it really needed to be included at the end of the day.

It also felt odd that [highlight to read spoiler] Pepper and Jane were not present but their names were thrown into conversation to try and explain it away. I wonder if it might have been better to just leave that unsaid.

As a fan of the MCU who has no comics background I was glad I had read enough (mostly here on the forums) about [highlight to read spoiler] the infinity stones to understand what the mid-credits scene was about, otherwise I wouldn't have understood it at all, I was also glad to know in advance that there was no after-credits scene to wait for.

As for tie-ins to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. there aren't any huge ones based on what we've seen of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so far but there is still one more S.H.I.E.L.D. episode to air before the movie is officially released in the US so I can't speak to that one yet. We will update our Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline Viewing Guide once we know more.

More on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Spinoff? Tue, 21 Apr 2015 06:50:47 +0000 Agents of SHIELD spinoffMore rumors are starting to surface about the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff series. Both ABC and Marvel are staying silent on the matter so everything should be taken with a grain of salt for now but several outlets reporting that the spinoff series pilot is currently being written with hopes to be presented ahead of the ABC Up Fronts event early next month where ABC is expected to announce a renewal for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The rumors include the casting of two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s actors Adrianne Palicki (Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird) and Nick Blood (Agent Lance Hunter) who both became series regulars in S.H.I.E.L.D. this season.

Also rumored is the possibility that the spinoff will air concurrently with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (hopefully leaving room for Agent Carter to return during the winter hiatus). If that wasn't enough, some outlets are also suggesting that yet another series is also in development.

Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski are producing the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff series.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., What Have They Become? Mon, 20 Apr 2015 10:52:50 +0000 In the world of entertainment there's character development, and then there's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! More than any other show, the main characters of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have undergone some tremendous changes as the show has progressed from the beginning of season one to nearing the end of its second season.

Agents of SHIELD Clark GreggWhen we met Coulson at the beginning of Season 1 he had already undergone a kind of huge change, he had been mysteriously brought back to life! Coulson was a rules man, steadfast and unwaivering in everything he believed in, but over the coming weeks he began to unravel. He began to sense that something wasn't quite right an that path took him on a journey where everything about his world started to fall apart. He began to question everything and when things came to a head he was thrust into the role of leader of not just his own small team, but of all of S.H.I.E.L.D. Over the course of season 2 we have seen Coulson become more and more secretive, frequently leaving his team and going off on secret missions. It seems he trusts no-one and while many of those around him know one or two of his secrets, he seems to be keeping everybody in the dark when it comes to the whole picture. He's guarded and he's hiding things but he is still steadfastly fighting for what he believes in, whatever that is.

Agents of SHIELD Chloe BennetIt is fair to say that Skye has undergone the biggest change. When we met her, like Coulson, she was very sure of everything she believed. She believed there should be no secrets and now she's keeping some huge ones of her own. When we met Skye she was an orphan and knew nothing of her past and now she has two parents and is learning things about her origins she could have never imagined. She was a natural with computers and information but now she's learning all about some very new powers she could have never foreseen. Additionally, Skye knew nothing about combat and couldn't fire a gun to save her self. Now she is competent in physical defense and definitely knows how to handle a weapon. She has learned a lot about both trust and betrayal.

Agents of SHIELD Ming NaMay is probably the character we have seen change the least. When we met her she appeared emotionless. She displayed amazing combat skills and a fierce loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. and to Coulson. What we have learned however is how much she has changed since before we met her. We've learned that she once knew how to laugh and smile, that she didn't take life so seriously and was planning a family with a husband she loved dearly.

Agents of SHIELD Brett DaltonThe first thing we learned about Ward was that had exceptional combat and espionage skills but he failed at people skills and had a hard time "getting" humor. He was the kind of guy you could rely on in a tough situation. He suffered abuse at the hands of his family and this made him protective of the people close to him. Towards the end of the season all that changed and it turns out he really wasn't who we thought he was. He was quick to kill people in cold blood having been brainwashed by his mentor, Agent Garrett, who turned out to be a bit of a lunatic. While we haven't seen enough of him to really know, it seems Ward is a little lost right now, the next few episodes will prove interesting where Ward's character development is concerned.

Agents of SHIELD Iain De CaesteckerFitz was shy and a little socially award when we met him. He rarely left Simmon's side. He had a brilliant mind and he had a way of creating new technology that showed exceptional talent. Fitz displayed bravery in the face of his fear and despite his inexperience proved himself to be a strong asset in the field who could call on unexpected skills when the need arises. He was quick to trust and loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. and to his team, until he suffered the ultimate betrayal by someone he cared about and had grown to trust. The biggest change to Fitz came as the result of hypoxia which affected his brain functioning. Struggling to find words and use his hands he lost confidence, amplified by the apparent loss of his dearest friend who as far as he knew had just abandoned him in his time of need. Slowly we have seen Fitz's skills return but his ability to trust has been compromised. He continues to display a strongly loyalty to Coulson and the S.H.I.E.L.D. he knows.

Agents of SHIELD Elizabeth HenstridgeWhen we met her, Simmons was fresh out of the Academy, full of excitement and an innocent youthfulness. Simmons and Fitz were inseparable. Super smart and outstanding in her field of biology, she grew in confidence and enjoyed the challenge of working in the field. Simmons displayed a strong sense of duty and willingness to self sacrifice when it came to protecting people she cared about but she couldn't lie to save herself and if she knew it was going to be required she felt the need to prepare extensively for the occasion. When we were reintroduced to Simmons early in season 2, the inability to lie had all but vanished and we have seen her become an expert at deception, keeping C0ulson's secrets from the rest of the team and lying convincingly at the drop of a hat, even to those close to her. Having removed herself from Fitz' side when she saw she was holding back his recovery she became much more independent and her skill set has shifted to include more of the technological in addition to biological.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  season 2 finale will be 2 hours long with both parts airing on Tuesday May 12. (Those in the Los Angeles area save the date we may host a fan viewing party.)

According to TV Guide here's what we can expect from the season finale:

There's a lot going on this season on S.H.I.E.L.D., but executive producer Jeffrey Bell promises the ambitious finale will answer all your big burning questions while posing a few news ones. Part of the conclusion will find Skye finally determining how she truly feels about her newfound powers. "We looked at her journey this season as birth of a superhero," Bell says. "You want by the end of the season to have a sense of 'This is who I am, these are my abilities and I'm mostly OK with it' or 'I hate it.'"Meanwhile, Coulson and Gonzales will continue to find themselves at odds, with May and Bobbi in caught in the middle. "Whether that ends up with a big group hug or bodies everywhere is to be determined," Bell teases.
