Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at San Diego Comic Con? We Think So!

With badges for the San Diego Comic Con going on sale this weekend we thought we would take a minute to talk about what we might expect from S.H.I.E.L.D. at the mega geek event of the year.

Last year the big announcement that ABC and Marvel were teaming up to create the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series came at New York Comic Con with a pre-recorded message from Joss Whedon and on stage appearance by Clark Gregg and of course several of the Marvel films have had a big comic con presence.

When discussing S.H.I.E.L.D. at the Television Critics Association press event in January ABC President Paul Lee spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and said “I know we’re going to have fun at Comic-Con.” which is enough to make us think announcing a series pickup is little more than a formality and that big things are in the works for this years San Diego event.

SHIELDtv.net’s Comic Con expert James shares what we can expect

If there’s even half the buzz and excitement surrounding S.H.I.E.L.D. at Comic-Con that there was for Avengers in 2010, we’re in for a great ride. Despite everybody knowing who was going to be announced during the Marvel panel, the air was electric that day. I count seeing Robert Downey Jr. & Samuel L. Jackson announcing the cast of the Avengers and writer/director Joss Whedon as one of my top 5 Comic-Con moments in my 17 years of attending.

As for S.H.I.E.L.D. being at Comic-Con this year, you can expect Marvel and ABC to pull out all the stops for their first foray into series television for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m not even saying “if” in this case, they would be insane not to show up and promote the show where it will do the most good with/for the fans. Most likely, and at the very least, there will be promo handouts and prop displays at the Marvel booth. They love to give out shirts and hats, but be prepared to work for them. Similar to the Item 47 scavenger hunt last year they may do some kind of ARG around the Gaslamp to see a special screening of the pilot. What would be best though is a panel (in Hall H of course) and pilot screening at Comic-Con. If they’re smart, they’ll run the pilot during the preview night screenings so as many people as possible can see it. Personally I’d rather they not show it during the panel since I like more time for cast and crew to talk about the show and take questions.

I would assume they would have a screening of the pilot.

I won’t be able to go to SDCC, but I look forward to reading about it online.

I think a lot of people are expecting/hoping for a pilot screening. We can hope!

  3. I don’t think they will screen the pilot. Maybe they’ll show a short or clips, but not the pilot. Marvel are very secretive and I suspect the pilot will contain stuff they won’t want to reveal too soon…

(Of course my opinion is coloured by jealousy, since I’m not going to SDCC. Wink)

I totally agree on that one. Especially on the jealousy-part. ;)

But I’d be also very happy if they will show a few clips or some trailers of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Once more I’ve failed to get Comic con tickets :(

but I do think there is a very good chance that they will show the entire pilot of S.H.I.E.L.D. only because the one and only time I attended Comic Con I found myself watching several pilot episodes for new shows….  it is a common way for studios/networks to get an audience’s reaction.

I definitely agree w/Dan Regal that it cuts too deeply into the time alloted for a Q&A, but that doesn’t seem to be a big consideration for the studios/networks that are paying for the trip to San Diego (ie the show would run 43 minutes and they would barely have time to introduce the stars of the new show before needing to clear the stage for the next panel).

Hopefully Joss will make sure he has plenty of time for Q&A fun, and those lucky enough to get tickets will record every word (I know they can’t record the screened pilot… assuming that the pilot will be screened).

Have fun you lucky Comic Con goers!

  6. There’s still a chance Embers, don’t loose all hope yet. In May after all the refunds have been processed they should release those tickets for sale.

I’d like to seem them maybe do a screening kind of like they did with Item 47 – where people had to “do” something to get a ticket. Though don’t make it too hard for those of us that are useless at these things!
